Hon. Mike Nixon
MLA - Porter Creek South
The Honourable Mike Nixon was elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly on October 11, 2011. He was sworn into Cabinet on November 5, 2011 as Minister of Justice and Minister of Tourism and Culture. He currently holds two portfolios: Minister of Health and Social Services, and the Minister responsible for the Workers' Compensation Health and Safety Board.
Born into a farming family in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Minister Nixon attended Humber College, graduating with Honours in 1994. He went on to acquire extensive experience working in the social sector. When he arrived in Yukon in 1998, he brought his knowledge and skills to our community, working with at-risk youth in the Whitehorse area and serving on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Yukon.
Having an entrepreneurial spirit, he has owned and operated a number of businesses including Frazer’s Family Fun Centre, Lanix Property Management and Eyewerx Graphic Design.
Minister Nixon is a longstanding member of the Yukon Party and is pleased to have served on the executive in various capacities including President and Treasurer.
Minister Nixon lives in Whitehorse with his partner Aurora and her two daughters. As the proud father of three boys, one with autism, he is particularly aware of the challenges facing parents of children with special needs. Inspired by his son, Jack, he co-founded Autism Yukon and partnered with the government to implement a system offering specialized services for children and adults with autism.
Minister Nixon is a motorcycle enthusiast with a love of travel and the open road, especially around Yukon. When he can find the time, he also enjoys skiing, hiking, running, fishing and playing guitar.
